How do I book a trip?

Contact Captain Josh directly at lightnfly@gmail.com

Where do trips leave from?

Captain Josh's is based on the south shore of Boston in Hull, MA.  As you plan out the details for your day on the water you'll coordinate a convenient pick up location that works for you.  We may meet in the Boston Seaport, at a park 'n ride on the way down to the cape, or at one of the many boat ramps in the area that we decide to fish together that day.  At time I have even dropped clients off at Logan Airport by boat at the end of the trip.  Depending on where you are staying or which direction you are coming from, Josh will work with you to coordinate a pick up that works well for you.  Click on the Contact Tab on the site as there are many GPS friendly addresses available.

Can you tell me a bit more about the Captain?

Josh was born and raised in Boston and has been fishing these waters since catching his first striped bass in 1998.  He played college baseball and then professionally for a few seasons....the two (fishing and baseball) seemed to go well together for him, but clearly he is better at fishing than he was at baseball!  Josh is all about spending time on the water, learning as much as possible about the fishery, and he lives for that feeling of total fulfillment you have after spending a full day on the water.  Josh enjoys guiding anglers of all different experience levels, and especially enjoys fishing in shallow water where things are most visible.  If you ask Josh, he will tell you that he has been forever changed since the first time he picked up a fly rod.  He lives with his wife Carla and his dog Fly in Hull, MA.

What should I bring with me?

It's usually pretty chilly in the mornings so dress in layers and bring a rain jacket, hat, polarized sunglasses, sunblock, snacks, boat shoes or non-marking soled shoes (please!).  Feel free to bring your own fishing rod if you'd like - for fly anglers I recommend 8-10 weight rods with intermediate or sink tip lines.  For spin fisherman a 7-8 foot 10-20 lb class rod with 15 or 20 lb braided line will get it done.

What does Light 'N Fly provide?

We will provide all of the rods, reels, tackle, flies, leader, lures, and anything you will need to catch a fish.  We will also have a cooler on board with ice and bottled water.  Fishing licenses are provided as well.  When it comes to fly fishing I will have everything we need, but if you book a trip on the skiff and you have some striper / bonefish / permit type flats flies that you like (crabs, shrimp, sparse clousers / deceivers - bring 'em with you!

Will we be keeping any fish to eat?

Light 'N Fly practices catch and release fishing almost exclusively.
Striped bass populations are in trouble and a great effort is being made up and down the east coast by fly and light tackle anglers to release these fish to build a better and stronger fishery for the future.  The population of the fish appears to be on the rebound over the last few years and we want to keep things headed in the right direction.  If you would like to keep a fish in accordance with the state rules and regulations, we would like to ask that we target blue fish or black sea bass rather than striped bass.  Please inform Josh up front if you are interested in keeping a fish for dinner and we can discuss.  Light 'N Fly does not permit the harvesting of Striped Bass - if you want to take a Striped Bass home, then I am not the guide for you.  I'm not trying to be difficult here, but I want to do my part to help our incredible Striped Bass fishery into the future.  The boat is equipped with a go-pro and we all have great cameras on our cell phones, capturing a great release photo or video of a healthy striped bass looks way cooler than holding a dead fish hours later at the dock....trust me!

Should we tip the captain?   If so, how much?

This part can feel a little awkward at the end of a day of fishing  (I know the feeling myself from hiring guides and being unsure of how tips work).  Some charter services require tips to be no less than a certain percentage of the cost of the charter for the day.  At Light 'N Fly, tips are greatly appreciated but
not necessarily required.  Clients that leave a tip do so by choice, and they tend to be in a similar range of what you may leave your server at a restaurant.

"Captain Josh is the best! We had a wide range of fishing experience in our group, and he made sure everyone was comfortable and successful. We all caught fish and had a great time doing it.  The striper that Captain Josh put me on wasn't just the biggest one I've ever caught, it was the biggest one I've ever seen!"
